Team advised by INESC-ID Researcher Rui Henriques has participated in the 2020 edition of the EDP University Challenge and conquered a place in the top 3. Daniel Marques de Castro, Miguel Trinca and João Aparício da Costa presented the work “Vehicle Smart Grid based on a Multi-Agent System”. This project aims to “manage the cost of changing charging stations, minimize the number of unused charging stations minimize waiting time of vehicles to charge”.
Researchers Diogo Barradas, Nuno Santos, and Luís Rodrigues were distinguished with the ANRW ISOC.PT 2020 Prize: Best Research Paper and Internet Impact Acknowledge Mention, with paper “On the unobservability of multimedia-based covert channels for Internet censorship circumvention”.
Using multimedia covert channels for Internet censorship circumvention
It is widely known that totalitarian states apply censorship techniques to prevent the free access to information online. In this work, we tackle the development of tools that allow for circumventing censorship by leveraging covert channels established over non-blocked multimedia applications, such as Skype. We also assess the ability of censors to detect covert channels when resorting to detection techniques based in machine learning. We explored the limitations of such techniques to develop new encoding mechanisms to create covert channels that are able to avoid detection. Our results make an important contribution towards the ability to bypass censorship, delivering a set of tools that allow citizens located in countries ruled by repressive regimes to freely access information in the Internet.
João Amado, Miguel Correia and Fernando M. V. Ramos were awarded with ANRW ISOC.PT 2020 Prize Relevant Research Mention, with the work “Intrusion Detection with Programmable Switches”.
This work aims to improve intrusion detection in computer networks by leveraging the novel monitoring capabilities of modern programmable switches. To defend against the growing sophistication of network attacks, our solution explores machine learning techniques that analyze network traffic data for timely identification and response to new attacks.
INESC-ID’s startup HeartGenetics – Genetics and Biotechnology, S.A. was recently acquired by ImpactLab, the largest genetic laboratory provider in Italy in oncology and pre-/post-natal genetic testing. By being part of ImpactLab group, HeartGenetics will be able to continue its expansion in the B2B business model and broaden the online business in Spain, Italy and South America. Our researcher Ana Teresa Freitas, CEO and co-founder of HeartGenetics, will continue to serve as CEO of the company and will support the development of the Company and its integration with the ImpactLab group.
HeartGenetics will keep its own brand and will continue to serve its clients in Portugal, Brazil, Netherlands and Spain. The company will also have the opportunity to start sales in Italy. “In 2013, we had the vision of creating a company that could use genetic data and computational tools to improve health for everybody. The acquisition of HeartGenetics by ImpactLab is an amazing and unique opportunity to build upon that vision, enhance our digital and bioinformatics capabilities, and deepen our roots in the personalized medicine field. For a startup in the diagnosis field, this acquisition represents a major achievement for the healthcare Portuguese startup ecosystem” stated Ana Teresa Freitas.
We are glad to be able to participate in another edition of European Researchers’ Night.
This year, for the first time, the conference will be held virtually, bringing together more than 200 activities, such as games, quizzes, applications, videos, live demonstrations, talks, etc.
INESC-ID’s researchers have prepared 5 activities to present on November 27, at European Researchers’ Night: 3 videos from different projects, a special interactive quiz, and a live demonstration:
Do you know how a satellite sees Earth? – Quiz to explore satellite imagery;
Emotional and Intelligent Agents for Testing Games and Simulations – interactive video where you find out how Frederico, an emotional and intelligent agent, feels as he tries to find a chair in different mazes;
Video presentation of the project Visual meets Textual: A Hybrid Programming Environment for Algorithmic Design;
Music Creation from Found Sounds – An Approach from Computational Creativity – video presentation of a system that creates electroacoustic music inspired by environments sounds / occasional sounds;
Simulating plasma physics with Exascale supercomputers – live demonstration to watch the ‘dance of plasmas with the help of supercomputers‘.
Join us!
All the information is available at European Researchers’ Night website.
K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) is an algorithm used to classify datasets and runs normally on a computer. However, as datasets grow, the processing time increases and it becomes necessary to accelerate the algorithm execution. This research presents a HW/SW architecture to accelerate the processing of a classifier using a KNN algorithm in FPGA.
The IFIP International Internet of Things (IoT) Conference is an annual event of IFIP entirely dedicated to IoT research, innovations, and applications.
The 3rd IFIP IoT will take place virtually on November 5th and 6th, 2020.
The conference brings together researchers from 6 countries to present 8 talks, which reflect the state-of-the-art of IoT in its different domains.
Augusto Casaca, researcher at INESC-ID, is a member of Steering Committee for IFIP International Internet of Things and will be presenting the talk “A Perspective on IoT Edge Computing and On Its Challenges “, on the 1st day of the event.
The National Science Summit’20 will take place from November 3rd to 4th, 2020, at the Lisbon Congress Centre.
Rodrigo Rodrigues, INESC-ID’s researcher, will moderate the session: “CMU Portugal – defining new frontiers in Technology within the health sector”, on November 4 at 2 p.m.
Several INESC-ID’s PhD students are also presenting their scientific posters at this event.
The National Science Summit is promoted by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia in collaboration with the Ciência Viva – National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, and the Parliamentary Commission of Education and Science.
INESC-ID’s researcher Isabel Trancoso has recently been honored with the International Speech Communication Association’s (ISCA) Special Service Medal for ‘sustained service for ISCA and the Speech Communication community in terms of leadership, outreach, and society recognition’.
Over the last 20 years, ISCA has only attributed 4 Special Service Medals.
Isabel Trancoso is a full professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and the President of the Scientific Council of INESC ID, and also the founder of INESC-ID’s Speech Processing Group, now referred to as L2F/HLT.
She was president of ISCA from 2007 to 2011, and has played several other leadership roles in the association such as chairing the ISCA Distinguished Lecturer Selection Committee, and the ISCA Fellow Selection Committee. She is a Fellow of IEEE and of ISCA.
INESC-ID’s startup company, HeartGenetics, was recently distinguished by Glintt in the HINTT Awards, on the category ‘Startup Innovation’. This award distinguishes the project ‘MyPharmaGenes’, developed by the company.
HeartGenetics, founded in 2013, is specialized in cardiovascular genetics and develops new high-tech bioinformatics technologies that support highly accurate analysis and integration of both genetic and clinical data.
INESC celebrated its 40th anniversary on October 8th at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Carlos Moedas (Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian) was the invited keynote speaker for this special session, which was livestreaming for hundreds of remote participants. A webinar session focused on creating new technology-based companies, gathered CEOs of eight companies, from the more than two dozen enterprises that were created as a result of INESC’s activities since 1980. The ceremony ended with the intervention of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor.
