’90 Segundos de Ciência’ Interviews Rodrigo Rodrigues

The radio show ’90 Segundos de Ciência’ interviewed Rodrigo Rodrigues, a researcher at INESC-ID, professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and one of the CMU Portugal National Directors, to learn more about his research on cloud computing and distributed computing systems.

This research has the potential to enable applications that run on cloud platforms to achieve simultaneously good performance by accessing data in a nearby data center, and the correct semantics that one would expect if the data is stored in a single, centralized location. Furthermore, this research also extends the methods that are currently used in Blockchain technologies to cope with the specific characteristics of cloud environments.

This research was awarded an ERC – European Research Council Grant.

  • European Researchers’ Night 2019

    European Researchers’ Night 2019

Last Friday more than hundred activities celebrated the science and the research at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) in Lisbon and at Jardim do Príncipe Real .

With the topic for the 2019 edition ‘SciCity – Science in the City’, the European Researchers’ Night invited the public to interact with the researchers and participate in activities on the areas of Environmental and Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Technology, Mathematics, among others.

The INESC-ID participated with three demonstrations in the areas of technology and human and social sciences:

    • SureThing: Location Proofs, with the participation of Gabriel Maia, Henrique Santos, Miguel Pardal and Rui Claro.
    • eSPERTo – System for Paraphrasing in Editing and Revision of Texts, with the participation of Anabela Barreiro.
    • LINA – A Serious Game For Children To Improve Social Relations With Their Peers, with the participation of Diogo Martins.

  • Thank You Professor José Tribolet

    Thank You Professor José Tribolet

The Retirement Ceremony for Professor José Tribolet took place at IST Congress Center in September 23rd.

A full auditorium with the presence of friends, family, colleagues and students attended at his last lecture, entitled “Framing Enterprise Engineering within General System’s Theory: Perspectives of a Human Centered Future”.

As a surprise, professor Tribolet’s PhD supervisor, Professor Alan Oppenheim from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) attended to the ceremony. In his words, the ‘academic jubilee of a student, a colleague and a friend’.

Thank you, Professor Tribolet, for your legacy.

  • Our First collaboration with Morocco: Research Project WiMeCOM

Our First collaboration with Morocco: Research Project WiMeCOM

WiMeCOM is a Moroccan project funded by the Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles (IRESEN), where INESC-ID is a partner together with the Moroccan Foundation for Advanced Science, Innovation and Research (MAScIR), the Institut National des Postes et Télécommunications (INPT), the Green Energy Park (GEP) and Tronico Atlas.

The overall objective of the WiMeCOM project is to develop hybrid wireless and wired smart metering solution.

The Communication Networks group of INESC-ID is collaborating specifically on modelling and optimization of a smart metering communication network solution integrating the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) and Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies.

In the context of this project, INESC-ID hosted Ms Souhaima Stiri (M.Sc.) from MAScIR and INPT, during July 2019.

Her mission was to collaborate with the Researcher António Grilo to integrate the LoRaWAN and PLC models into an optimization framework based on a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm.

This algorithm will be used to find suitable trade-offs between communication quality and the cost of the communications infrastructure. Feedback from real pilot deployments will later be used to refine the model and transform it into a powerful and reliable tool that can be used by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) for deployment planning.
