Perf Servs’s team, composed by Rui Maranhão and Daniel Fortunato, awarded 2nd place at 2019 Qiskit Camp Europe, organized by IBM. The event took place at Zurich in September.
The distinguished team developed a solution that allows doing benchmarking of Qiskit framework, the framework of IBM to develop quantum programs.
Last Friday more than hundred activities celebrated the science and the research at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) in Lisbon and at Jardim do Príncipe Real .
With the topic for the 2019 edition ‘SciCity – Science in the City’, the European Researchers’ Night invited the public to interact with the researchers and participate in activities on the areas of Environmental and Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Technology, Mathematics, among others.
The INESC-ID participated with three demonstrations in the areas of technology and human and social sciences:
SureThing: Location Proofs, with the participation of Gabriel Maia, Henrique Santos, Miguel Pardal and Rui Claro.
eSPERTo – System for Paraphrasing in Editing and Revision of Texts, with the participation of Anabela Barreiro.
LINA – A Serious Game For Children To Improve Social Relations With Their Peers, with the participation of Diogo Martins.
The Retirement Ceremony for Professor José Tribolet took place at IST Congress Center in September 23rd.
A full auditorium with the presence of friends, family, colleagues and students attended at his last lecture, entitled “Framing Enterprise Engineering within General System’s Theory: Perspectives of a Human Centered Future”.
As a surprise, professor Tribolet’s PhD supervisor, Professor Alan Oppenheim from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) attended to the ceremony. In his words, the ‘academic jubilee of a student, a colleague and a friend’.
WiMeCOM is a Moroccan project funded by the Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles (IRESEN), where INESC-ID is a partner together with the Moroccan Foundation for Advanced Science, Innovation and Research (MAScIR), the Institut National des Postes et Télécommunications (INPT), the Green Energy Park (GEP) and Tronico Atlas.
The overall objective of the WiMeCOM project is to develop hybrid wireless and wired smart metering solution.
The Communication Networks group of
INESC-ID is collaborating specifically on modelling and optimization of a smart
metering communication network solution integrating the Long Range Wide Area
Network (LoRaWAN) and Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies.
In the context of this project, INESC-ID hosted Ms Souhaima Stiri (M.Sc.) from MAScIR and INPT, during July 2019.
Her mission was to collaborate with the Researcher António Grilo to integrate the LoRaWAN and PLC models into an optimization framework based on a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm.
This algorithm will be used to find
suitable trade-offs between communication quality and the cost of the
communications infrastructure. Feedback from real pilot deployments will later
be used to refine the model and transform it into a powerful and reliable tool
that can be used by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) for deployment
planning.
The 9th edition of the Lisbon Machine Learning School took place between 11 and 18 July at Instituto
Superior Técnico.
LxMLS 2019 was jointly
organized by Feedzai, INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Instituto de
Telecomunicações (IT), Priberam Labs and Unbabel.
This summer school is
dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and receives
students, researchers and professionals in the areas of Natural Language
Processing and Computational Linguistics.
Each edition has a demo day
which promotes the contact between the students and research groups and companies.
On July 15th and 16th we welcomed the visit of the advisory board members: Srinivas Devadas, Morris Sloman, José Carlos Principe and Ricardo Baeza-Yates. These external advisors advice the institution, providing a performance outlook in which the team regards for its strategy and institution plans.
The advisory board had the opportunity to know the current activities of the several research lines, as well as some demos. The visit ended with a plenary meeting opened to all the INESC-ID researchers.
Instituto Superior Técnico interviewed recently Leonel Sousa, President of INESC-ID, due to the 20 years’ celebration of our institution. A glimpse of the outcome of these last two decades and the future and challenges for the next years are among this short interview (in the link below). Read the full interview in the link below.
Last week took place at IST-Taguspark Campus the INCISTA Internships, under the program ‘Ciência Viva no Laboratório – Criar Futuro’.
This internship, coordinated by the Professor Moisés Piedade, receive high school students and invite them to increase knowledge about the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Informatics, Artificial Intelligence and Electronic, Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering.
The activity includes demos, technical explanations and each student develop a subsystem SUBINHA or the N3E robot.
We are very proud and satisfied to announce the evaluation of R&D Units that we received from FCT this month.
We were
classified as excellent in all the evaluation parameters, which distinguish the
‘quality, merit relevance and internationalization of the R&D activities of
the Integrated Researchers in the R&D Unit Application, merit of the team
of Integrated Researchers and the appropriateness of objectives, strategy, plan
of activities and organization’.
This
recognition is a result of the developed work over the last two decades.
INESC-ID celebrated the 20th anniversary with a special event that took place at Museu do Oriente.
The ceremony started with the intervention of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor.
We had two special panels discussing both ‘Grandes Desafios de Investigação para a Próxima Década’, and ‘Empreendedorismo e Papel dos Alumni na Ligação às Empresas’.
1st Panel
Moderator: Arlindo Oliveira, President of Instituto Superior Técnico, INESC-ID
Sirini Devadas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Morris Sloman, Imperial College London
Ricardo Baeza-Yates, NTENT & Northeastern University
2nd Panel
Moderator: Isabel Trancoso, INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico
