    European Night of Researchers’ 2018

The European Night of Researchers’ for the 2018-2019 biennium under the theme “Science in the City” took place in Lisbon on September 28th,  from 6 p.m. to 12 p.m., at the National Museum of Natural History and Science and  the Principe Real Garden.

More than 100 activities was held: science experiments and demonstrations, workshops, hand-on activities, quizzes and puzzle games, exhibitions, informal talks, a debate and street animation which aims to bring together researchers and society.

The theme for this biennium aimed to respond to the main concerns of urban communities related to the global changes foreseen for the coming decades, highlighting the importance of science to ensure quality of life in the cities of the future and the preservation of cultural heritage as an essential factor for sustainability.

The  IT MEDEX Team showcased their work “Augmented and Virtual Anatomy” at the National Museum of Natural History and Science.

It was an opportunity for the general public to get to know the project and dialogue with the researchers.

From September 14th to 16th, the Tropical Botanical Garden, in Belém, was the stage of another Encontro da Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos, this time dedicated to work.

From the impact of technology to demography, the future of work is one of the most debated topics of today. In this context, the event titled “O trabalho dá que pensar”  brought together several of the largest national and international specialists in various areas.

On Sunday, INESC-ID researcher Arlindo Oliveira, contributed for the debate “A code of conduct for robots?”.

  • New book – Computer Architecture: Digital Circuits to Microprocessors

New book – Computer Architecture: Digital Circuits to Microprocessors

This new release co-authored by INESC-ID researchers José Monteiro and  Arlindo Oliveira covers digital circuits, computer architecture and assembly programming.

The authors  addresses the concepts from logic gates to advanced computer architecture. It comes with a full spectrum of exercises and web-downloadable support materials, including assembler and simulator, which can be used in the context of different courses. The authors also make available a hardware description, which can be used in labs and assignments, for hands-on experimentation with an actual, simple processor. This unique compendium is a useful reference for undergraduates, graduates and professionals majoring in computer engineering, circuits and systems, software engineering, biomedical engineering and aerospace engineering.

It is published in Portuguese by IST Press and in English by World Scientific (also available at Amazon).

  • New project SLICE – Combining social agent architectures and machine learning

New project SLICE – Combining social agent architectures and machine learning

Slice (Social Learning for Intelligent Characters) is one of the most recent projects of INESC-ID. This project’s objective is to develop and validate an authoring-friendly framework for the creation of transparent social intelligent agents capable of being deployed as virtual characters in training simulations or games, or used to drive the behavior of social robots. This framework joins two until now disparate areas of artificial intelligence research, namely, social agent architectures and machine learning.

By using machine learning techniques over a solid social theory foundation that defines the structure of the learning task, our framework provides a new methodology where authors can create intelligent characters by providing examples of social interaction.

The INESC-ID team is coordinated by Pedro Santos from ISS and is composed of researchers Rui Prada, João Dias, and Manuel Lopes.

INESC-ID participates in Workshop “Robotics in healthcare”

INESC-ID Researchers Francisco Melo and Miguel Faria,  participated in the workshop “”Robotics in health”” organized by the shared Services in Ministry of Health, EPE that took place on July 17th in Lisbon.

This workshop brought together several national project  that aims to provide better healthcare to patients.

INSIDE Project explores symbiotic interactions between humans and robots in joint cooperative activities. It strives to develop new hardware and software solutions that will support a real-world interaction with children with ASD in a joint cooperative task with therapeutic purposes.

    HeartGenetics presents MyNutriGenes® in Brazil

These past few months, INESC-ID startup company HeartGenetics had the great opportunity to present their newest products around Brazil.

HeartGenetics team provided a training course about MyNutriGenes® and MyFitnessGenes® products to a group of 20 nutritionists in Natal, Brazil, in a collaboration with two local partners: the company Personal Genoma and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). With this event HeartGenetics had the opportunity to increase its market share in the region being HeartGenetics tests already a reference in Natal.

HeartGenetics promotion in Brazil also included the participation at the event “Nutrição Eficiente” in Campinas, São Paulo.

The participation in this event was the main goal of this Brazilian market approach. In this event HeartGenetics presented both MyNutriGenes® and MyFitnessGenes® products to more than 2.500 healthcare professionals and it was possible to close sales with 100 new clients.

MyNutriGenes® is a 99% accurate and actionable genetic test from HeartGenetics that informs about how our unique genetic makeup impacts the definition of a personalized diet and a healthy weight management.

MyFitnessGenes® is an actionable genetic test that informs about how each individual’s unique genetic profile impacts the definition of a more personalized training program in order to achieve an optimized athletic performance.

These products are also available in Portugal and are accessible to all population through different partnerships.
