The Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office (KTO) stimulates and manages knowledge and technology transfer activities, with the aim of increasing the economic and societal impact of INESC-ID’s research.
Working in close coordination with the Board of Directors and internal services, the office is responsible for organising the protection of research results and managing the intellectual property portfolio, and for identifying suitable market opportunities and developing commercialisation efforts. The office also promotes entrepreneurship and supports the creation of new spin-off companies, helping translate scientific innovation into real-world applications. Finally, it runs awareness and training initiatives for INESC-ID researchers on these matters.
What We Do

Protecting Research Results
We help researchers protect and maximise the value of their research results through effective intellectual property management. We identify promising research results and define protection strategies that support technology licensing, ensuring that innovations are well positioned for successful transfer to society.
Collaborating with Industry and Public Administration
We facilitate interaction between INESC-ID and companies, public organisations, and other external partners. Through collaborative R&D, contract research, consultancy, and service provision, we help translate scientific expertise into innovative solutions across several areas of application.
